Austin Creative Learning Initiative — Arts Partner Convenings (2022-23)

Calling all Austin arts partners!

Thank you for being part of the Austin's Creative Learning Initiative, a collective-impact partnership among the Austin Independent School District, the City of Austin, MINDPOP, and more than 200 community arts organizations. Together, we are spearheading system-wide changes to bring the transformative power of the arts to our students everywhere they are learning.

Join us for monthly Arts Partner Convenings where we come together as a community to learn from and support each other in our collective work to help more than 90 Austin ISD schools accelerate learning and foster community by ensuring all students benefit from:

  • Creative Teaching, rigorous and student-driven instructional strategies drawn from the arts that educators use across all subjects,
  • Equitable access to visual and performing arts for a well-rounded education, and
  • Interactive experiences with our city’s arts partners and cultural communities to close opportunity gaps.

The convening dates for the 2022-23 school year are:

  • Aug. 25 (past)
  • Sept. 29 (past)
  • Oct. 20
  • Nov. 17
  • Dec. 16
  • Jan. 26
  • Feb. 23
  • Mar. 23
  • Apr. 20 and
  • May 18.

The events are free and open to all artists and arts organizations working or hoping to work in AISD schools.

Dance Across Austin — Intro to West African Dance Basics (Nov. 3 - Dec. 15)

As part of Dance Across Austin, MINDPOP presents "Intro to West African Dance Basics" with Lannaya Drum & Dance.

"Intro to West African Dance Basics" is open to beginners of all ages. The class focuses on dance movement and vocabulary. Parents are encouraged to attend—and dance with their kids!

  • When: 4:30-5:30 p.m. Thursdays, Nov. 3 - Dec. 15. No class Nov. 24.

  • Where: Carver Museum & Cultural Center, 1165 Angelina St.

Registration: The series of six classes is $30 (i.e. $5 per class). Please register and pay for the series via Eventbrite before classes begin.

Background: Dance Across Austin is MINDPOP's citywide initiative to bring more dance into more spaces across the city. For this large-scale project, we are collaborating with Austin ISD, the City of Austin and arts partners to increase access to dance education in classrooms, campuses and communities throughout the area.

During school, we are integrating national dance standards into Austin ISD's curriculum, including through physical education, art and music opportunities for more than 33,000 students. For out-of-school time, we are partnering with the City of Austin to increase the number of dance classes offered at cultural and recreation centers throughout our communities.

Dance Across Austin is made possible with the support of the Genevieve and Ward Orsinger Foundation.

Dance Across Austin — "B*TRU Arts Boom Box Hero" (Nov. 9 - Dec. 21)

As part of Dance Across Austin, MINDPOP presents "B*TRU Arts Boom Box Hero" for all school-age children. The class focuses the fundamentals of Hip Hop dance and philosophy.

  • When: 6-7 p.m. Wednesdays, Nov. 9 - Dec. 21. No class Nov. 23.

  • Where: South Austin Recreation Center, 1100 Cumberland Rd.

Registration: The series of six classes is $30 (i.e. $5 per class). Please register and pay for the series via Eventbrite before classes begin.

Dance Across Austin — "Blue Lapis Light Aerial Silks" (Nov. 14 - Dec. 19)

As part of Dance Across Austin, MINDPOP presents "Blue Lapis Light Aerial Silks." The free class focuses on silks technique, strength, and communication through movement.

Teens (middle- and high-school students) encouraged to attend the limited-capacity class.

  • When: 5:30-6:30 p.m. Mondays, Nov. 14 - Dec. 19. No class Nov. 21.

  • Where: South Austin Recreation Center, 1100 Cumberland Rd.

Registration: The series of five classes is free and has limited capacity. Registration via Eventbrite is required to reserve a spot.
